Accessibility in Instruction
-In person option, we would need a teaching space with access to production equipment (cameras, lights, sound recording, and editing equipment).
-Online modality, it can be offered so the participants can use their resources, such as devices with cameras (tablets or cell phones), and have paid subscriptions to editing software that they can download to personal computers.
-Curriculum building is based on the seven pillars: Embodied Meditationa and Exploration, Film Analysis and Skill Building, Identity Discussion and Definiton of Personal Stories, Media Production and Editing, and Showcase or Festival Celebration.
The personnel, and guests include
-A teacher that covers background on disability history and justice: Deepens participants’ understanding of disability as a social and historical construct.
-A teacher that goes over all technical filmmaking skills: Enhances participants’ ability to effectively convey their stories through film.
-A teacher who brings holistic practice and pins the story. Incorporating language, sensory awareness, and reflective discussions to promote a deeper personal connection to one’s narrative.
-The number of assistants will vary, depending on the size of the group, the needs of the students, and the modality of the instruction (it could be on-line or in person).

Pilot Program:
Disability Reflections Personal Video-Making Workshop had an experience.
In the summer of 2024, we successfully launched the pilot for the “Disability Reflections Personal Video-Making Workshop.” This innovative program was conducted online over five weeks, comprising eight two-hour sessions. Additionally, participants benefited from separate individual sessions focused on story building and technical guidance, tailored to enhance their filmmaking skills and narrative development. Participants utilized their own resources, such as cell-phones, to capture video footage, embodying the DIY spirit of the initiative. To ensure professional quality, all videos were edited by a professional editor. The culmination of the workshop was an in-person showcase held at BRIC House, providing a platform for participants to present their work. Feedback from disability advocates, who reviewed the completed videos, was shared with the students in a feedback session, ensuring that each participant received constructive and targeted insights to further their understanding and skills. This experience reinforced the evidence that there is a need for disabled individuals to tell personal stories. If this pilot was successful without resources, with support the reach to and the quality will be much better. Imagine what we can see and hear.
